How Do Your Blinds Save On Energy Costs?
In order to properly understand hows energy efficient blinds save you money, you first must elminate the traditional thinking... or what we have been previously taught. People say to me all the time.... "Well... I get the heat on the west side of the house in the summer. And the rest of the windows dont get heat" Almost every single customer believes we only get heat in our homes in the summer with direct sunlight.
Where did we get this false line of thinking??. We got it from commercials on tv from companies that sell windows and siding. They advertise and say things like "Keep out the heat...and keep out the cold". This line of thinking is so far from the truth from the way it actually is!!!
Infared Heatloss Picture
Back To The Basics….
When is the last time you woke up in the morning in the winter, then shoveled off your car. Then put a ladder up to your home and Scraped of your windows? No.. you havent. Think back to the worst snowstorm you ever seen. Did you wake up in the morning to find your windows covered with snow? NO. Here is why.....
First you need to understand that warm and cold air attract each other 24/7. In the winter months heat is attracted from in your home to the cold air outside. Hense the reason they say 50% of your heatloss is attracted outside. It doesnt stop there... for every amount of heat that is attracted outside... a equal amount of cold winter air is attracted inside your home.
Have you ever stood in front of your large front window and swore that you have a cold draft?? Or sat on your favourite sofa and it felt like cold was dropping right on your sholders? Guess what...its not a draft. Its the simple attraction of warm and cold air attracting each other. Why is it that we all understand that we get heatloss out of all our windows in the winter.... but yet we belive that we only get summer heat coming into our homes only on the south or west side??
In the summer months the warm and cold air attract each other on every single window, day and night, no matter the direction of your window. The attraction of warm and cold air does not change based on the season! Make sence? Its time to spend less time worring about what is outside coming inside. What we need to concentrate on is retaining the heat that you pay for as long as possible... or retaining the cool air that you pay for, and making your home comfortable and far more energy efficient!
SUMMER: In the summer months when you new blinds are down you are simply creating a barrier. When you run your AC or central air, the cool air is retained. Now the cool air is no longer being attracted outside. You will quickly notice that your AC is not running near as after becasue the cool air is now being retained. Now, instead of the traditional "closing all the blinds and living in darkness".... , you will notice that you will still have a great view and allow light into your rooms while reflecting the heat, UV Rays and the glare. And also your AC will have much less runtime while reflecting 70% of the heat and 95% of the UV Rays.
WINTER: In the winter months the principal is almost identical. When you produce heat from your furnace typically half of the heatloss is attracted out the windows. Take a look at where your heat vents are?? Once again we need to create a barrier and keep the heat retained. When you retain the heat the thermostat has no reason to keep telling the the furnace to cycle off and on near as often becasue the heat is now retained. Thus a much appreciated level of comfort and energy savings. You will confidently cut the "out the window heatloss" by a minimum of 50% and nighttime thermal heatloss by 37%.
